Moringa Oleifera: The Miracle Tree

Imagine a tree in your backyard that will meet all your nutritional needs, take care of you medicinally, and purify your water for you. This tree actually exists. For centuries, the natives of northern India and many parts of Africa have known of the many benefits of Moringa oleifera. Its uses are as unique as the names it is known by, such as clarifier tree, horseradish tree and drumstick tree (referring to the large drumstick shaped pods) and in East Africa it is called "mother's best friend”. Virtually every part of the tree can be used. Native only to the foothills of the Himalayas, it is now widely cultivated in Africa, Central and South America, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. This tree, though little known in the Western world, is nutritional dynamite. There are literally hundreds of uses for this tree.

The immature pods are the most valued and widely used of all the tree parts. The pods are extremely nutritious, containing all the essential amino acids along with many vitamins and other nutrients. The immature pod can be eaten raw or prepared like green peas or green beans, while the mature pods are usually fried and possess a peanut-like flavor. The pods also yield 38 - 40% of non-drying, edible oil known as Ben Oil. This oil is clear, sweet and odorless, and never becomes rancid. Overall, its nutritional value most closely resembles olive oil. The thickened root is used as a substitute for horseradish although this is now discouraged as it contains alkaloids, especially moriginine, and a bacteriocide, spirochin, both of which can prove fatal following ingestion. The leaves are eaten as greens, in salads, in vegetable curries, as pickles and for seasoning. They can be pounded up and used for scrubbing utensils and for cleaning walls. Leaves and young branches are relished by livestock. The Bark can be used for tanning and also yields a coarse fiber. The flowers, which must be cooked, are eaten either mixed with other foods or fried in batter and have been shown to be rich in potassium and calcium.

In developing tropical countries, Moringa trees have been used to combat malnutrition, especially among infants and nursing mothers. Three non-governmental organizations in particular - Trees for Life, Church World Service and Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization - advocate Moringa as natural nutrition for the tropics.” Leaves can be eaten fresh, cooked, or stored as dried powder for many months without refrigeration, and without loss of nutritional value. Moringa is especially promising as a food source in the tropics because the tree is in full leaf at the end of the dry season when other foods are typically scarce. Analyses of the leaf composition have revealed them to have significant quantities of vitamins A, B and C, calcium, iron and protein. According to Optima of Africa, Ltd., a group that has been working with the tree in Tanzania, "25 grams daily of Moringa Leaf Powder will give a child" the following recommended daily allowances:

Protein 42%, Calcium 125%, Magnesium 61%, Potassium 41%, Iron 71%, Vitamin A 272%, and Vitamin C 22%. These numbers are particularly astounding; considering this nutrition is available when other food sources may be scarce.

Scientific research confirms that these humble leaves are a powerhouse of nutritional value. Gram for gram, Moringa leaves contain: SEVEN times the vitamin C in oranges, FOUR times the Calcium in milk, FOUR times the vitamin A in carrots, TWO times the protein in milk and THREE times the Potassium in bananas.

The Moringa tree has great use medicinally both as preventative and treatment. Much of the evidence is anecdotal as there has been little actual scientific research done to support these claims. India's ancient tradition of ayurveda says the leaves of the Moringa tree prevent 300 diseases. One area in which there has been significant scientific research is the reported antibiotic activity of this tree.

This is clearly the area in which the preponderance of evidence - both classical scientific and anecdotal evidence - is overwhelming. The scientific evidence has now been available for over 50 years, although much of it is completely unknown to western scientists. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s a team from India identified a compound they called pterygospermin. This group was also able to demonstrate its mode of antimicrobial action in the mid 1950’s. Field reports and ecological studies form part of a rich traditional medicine history claiming efficacy of leaf, seed, root, bark, and flowers against a variety of dermal and internal infections. In 1964 other active compounds were isolated and tested in-vitro, and these studies, along with observational studies provide a very plausible mechanism of action for the centuries of claims of efficacy. Unfortunately, because many of the reports of antibiotic efficacy in humans are not supported by placebo controlled, randomized clinical trials, Western medical prejudice leaves the Western world ignorant of Moringa’s antibiotic properties.

Another area of folklore which research supports is in cancer treatment. Moringa species have long been recognized by folk medicine practitioners as having value in the treatment of tumors. Studies examined certain compounds for their cancer preventive potential. Recently two of these compounds were shown to be potent inhibitors of activation of lymphoblastoid (Burkitt’s lymphoma) cells. One of these compounds also inhibited tumors in mice bred to be prone to tumors. In another study, Bharali and colleagues examined skin tumor prevention following ingestion of drumstick (Moringa seedpod) extracts. In this mouse model, which included appropriate positive and negative controls, a dramatic reduction in skin tumors was demonstrated. More rigorous study is required in order to achieve a level of proof required for full medical endorsement of Moringa as, in this case, a cancer preventative plant.

After the oil is extracted from the pods, the seed-cake remaining contains the active components for removing turbidity (solid particles) from water. Because bacteria adhere to the solids, this seed-cake also effectively removes bacteria. At the Thyolo Water Treatment Works in Malawi, Africa, two researchers from the University of Leicester, England, have worked on substituting moringa seeds for alum to remove solids in water for drinking. Not only were the tests successful in removing as much solid material as alum, but the seeds used were "purchased from enthusiastic villagers in Nsanje Region in Malawi" (Folkard and Sutherland, 1996. Not only is Moringa oleifera as effective as aluminum sulphate (alum) in removing suspended solids from turbid water, it has a major advantage. Because it can be produced locally, "using Moringa rather than alum would save foreign exchange and generate farm and employment income." The potential for Moringa to create a new market for a community is there, and studies and projects are taking place examining this potential. Use of this natural substance would also remove a source of aluminum contamination.

This tree is truly a “miracle” tree offering hope; nutritionally, medicinally and economically to devastatingly poor 3rd world countries. It has just recently begun being used as a supplement in a juice form and in powdered leaf tablets.

Fruits are Loaded with Nutrients

It’s hard to beat fruits. They provide an abundance of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, essential oils, antioxidants, fiber, and anti-inflammatory substances. Many are alkaline-forming, so they help counteract the strongly acidic Western diet that eats away at our bones. High levels of potassium in fruit balance high salt diets to help prevent high blood pressure. They also help manage blood sugar, regulate bowel function, and strengthen blood vessels, bones, nails, teeth, skin and hair. Humans could not survive long without healthy fruit.

Antioxidant content may be the most compelling reason for loading up on these wonderful foods. Oxidative stress from eating, illness or injury, produces excess free radicals that damage cells and tissues. Skipping antioxidants, over time, may ultimately lead to heart disease, cancer, allergies, and other inflammatory diseases. However, not all fruits are created equal. Fruits like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, grapefruit and fresh cranberry have the best antioxidant content, followed by apples, peaches, pears, plums, oranges and dates. The exotic juices of pomegranate, mangosteen, acái and goji berry are also unbeatable for antioxidant protection. Whole fruit is best, but juices are acceptable, especially if not concentrated and no sugar is added. Unfortunately, people are attracted to the super sweet juices and fruits like bananas, grapes and orange juice. Yet, even these are superior to most of the sweetened junk that we feed our kids.

Choosing organic fruit is another important consideration, especially for children, who are more susceptible to the dangers of pesticides and other toxins. Organic fruit has also been shown to contain more antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals than conventional fruits. It may cost more, but the cost to health from eating inferior fruit is much greater.

Fruits are best eaten on an empty stomach. Indigestion is on the rise in the U.S., and one reason is from eating fruits with other foods. Fruits pass quickly though the stomach and are rapidly digested in the intestines. If fruit is eaten with other foods, it is kept waiting in the stomach, where it may ferment and produce gases and harmful compounds. Digestive processes are also disrupted and the fruit’s nutritive value is compromised. Therefore, it is best to eat fruit as a snack in between meals, especially about 30 minutes before a meal to get the best antioxidant boost. Scientists at the Agricultural Research Service, investigating the effects of antioxidants on after-meal oxidative stress, found that grapes, kiwi and wild blueberries were high performers when it came to raising blood levels of important antioxidants. As a general rule, fruit should not be eaten at the end of a meal. However, most people do not have digestive problems with berries after eating. So, if you insist on dessert after a meal, go with berries.

Our early ancestors would not recognize the fruits available in today’s supermarkets. Scientists in the last century have selectively bred fruits to have a long shelf life, few seeds, less fiber and a powerfully sweet taste. Wild fruits are typically less sweet, and much richer in micronutrients than cultivated fruits, particularly in minerals (e.g., copper, iron, calcium) and the vitamins C, E, K, beta-carotene and folic acid. The vitamin C intake of our fruit-eating ape cousins is estimated to be 2-6 grams, compared about 60 mg for humans (one hundred times less!). Wild fruits are also much richer in the millions of “background” nutrients essential to good human health, such as bioflavonoids, terpenes, phenols, carotenes, and many more. For much more information regarding the good foods our ancestors ate, pick up the book “Deadly Harvest” by Dr. Geoff Bond.

The biggest problem with modern fruits has as much to do with what is present in them as what is absent. Starchy and processed fruits are loaded with sugar. Fruits rich in sugar can aggravate pre-existing ailments, such as diabetes, allergies, cancer, and other inflammatory conditions. Dried fruits are nearly as bad, since the sugar is concentrated, and the drying process destroys many of the micronutrients. Frozen fruit retains much of its antioxidant content, but canned fruit should be (garbage) canned.

Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can also be obtained through dietary supplements. Obviously, fruits and vegetables provide a greater wealth of nutrients than do supplements, but getting these nutrients in the diet somehow is the most important consideration. Even gummy bear antioxidants are better for kids than no fruit at all. Plus, antioxidant supplements can provide higher quantities of vitamins C, E, zinc, selenium, vitamin A and many plant flavonoids than fruits and vegetables. The content of these nutrients in fruits varies from farm to farm and year to year. And, with the deterioration of our soil, less and less of these nutrients are found in food. Fortunately, many essential antioxidants can be found in a high quality multivitamin, which every man, woman and child should be taking daily.

If you're not interested in the chemistry of all the wonderful things found in fruits and vegetables, just shop for color. The colorful pigments in blueberries, raspberries oranges, pomegranate, purple tomatoes, etc., are chemicals that protect them from the sun. These pigments are antioxidant rich and protect people in the same way they do plants.

So, if you have a little boy or girl at home with a diarrhea problem, or an inflamed bun, the last thing you want to do is stop all fruits (as an ignorant physician recently recommended to a friend). Certainly stop the sugary juices, but not the whole fruit, especially organic, non-starchy varieties. Switch to water, perhaps with a little pomegranate juice for flavor and antioxidant punch. Make your own fresh fruit sauces or smoothies, or find a good organic brand of baby food that contains these antioxidants. Good food means good health. So, when it comes to food, we must take health into our own hands.

Consume Super Foods for Super Health and Disease Prevention

We all know that when it comes to nutrition, all foods are not made the same. Whole wheat flour is better than white flour, almonds are more nutritionally sound than peanuts, and grilling is a much healthier alternative form of cooking than frying. When it comes to what we put in our bodies, we ought to be aiming for what the "Man of Steel" eats on a regular basis — super foods.

Super foods are not new to the marketplace. In fact, you may have lots of super foods in your pantry or refrigerator at this moment. What is new, however, is the realization of just how "super" these foods really are for our health and well-being through independent studies by health experts.

Super foods by definition are foods that are nutritionally dense, high in fiber and are believed to fight disease and increase longevity. And not surprisingly, most super foods are the ones you'll find in nature that don't require any kind of processing or refining. Take berries, for example. Every berry is considered "super" but a study done on blueberries and strawberries properties elicited some exciting results for berry lovers.

The study, published in the journal of Neurobiology and Aging, used 60 different rats and divided the rats into three groups. One group was fed strawberry extract, and the second was fed blueberry extract. The third was the control group and was not fed any berry extract. The rats were then released to run through a water maze, but not before they were exposed to a radioactive iron source which was meant to simulate age-related cognitive decline. After the run through was completed, results revealed that the control group showed significant impairment in learning ability, while the groups of rats that ate berry extract showed a resistance to cognitive decline.

While scientists who performed the study say more testing needs to be done, this study suggests that consuming berries protects the brain from radiation damage and decline in learning ability.

It's believed that the chemical responsible for blueberries' superpower is anthocyanin—what gives blueberries their color and may also play a role in their antioxidant activity. Blueberries, according to the USDA Human Research Center, are ranked #1 in antioxidant activity when compared to 40 other fruits and vegetables (Antioxidants help rid the body of cancer-causing free radicals).

Berries aren't the only super foods with super properties. Just as Superman's powers aren't relegated solely to super speed or super strength, each super food brings with it its own special power:

Avocados—Avocados do have a considerable amount of fat in them, but the right kind of fat. Like olive oil, avocados have healthy amounts of monounsaturated fat, which help lower "bad" cholesterol levels (LDL) while raising the "good" ones (HDL). Avocados are also great to combine with other foods as its properties help the body absorb nutrients from other nutrient-dense foods (like lycopene found in tomatoes, for example).

Beans— The old school days song of beans being good for your heart is true, thanks to the high amounts of betaine found in them. In addition, beans also have high amounts of lutein, which won't bring x-ray vision, but will help in protecting your eyes from sunlight.

Dark Chocolate—Believe it or not, chocolate, the dark variety, can help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow. The special power dark chocolate has lies in its flavonoids, a type of anti-oxidant. Even though flavonoids are found in apples, tea, onions and peanuts, research indicates that dark chocolate has the highest level of flavonoids. That doesn't mean you should go out and eat it to your heart's delight, but you no longer need to attach "guilty" with the "pleasure" you'll get out of eating moderate portions of dark chocolate each week.

Oats—Eating raw oats isn't exactly an appetizing meal, but they're quite appetizing in oatmeal. Oats are a great source of vitamins and minerals, have a low glycemic index level, are high in fiber, low in sugar and have been proven to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

This is just a partial list of the super foods that can bring you a life of abundant health. Remember: Eating exorbitant amounts of almonds or blueberries does not equal more health. As with all things, moderation is key.

The Dying World: Healing Methods Increasingly Fail

What happened to the world? Where did we go wrong? Is it as hopeless as it is beginning to appear? This article will illuminate the increasing failure rate of all forms of medicine and healing and will isolate four possible reasons why this might be happening in spite of all we know and all we are learning. This article concludes with a discussion of the division occurring among people of the world today: those consumed by said failure and those motivated by it.

Only a few years ago, the tonality of those who engaged in healthy eating and living was one of certainty that they were avoiding the plagues of those who were on the SAD. They started abandoning clearly harmful behaviors and experienced a surge in health and very often spontaneous healing. That tonality has changed today. It has become plain that even the healthiest people, by such standards as are commonly known today, are not substantially healthier than the general population.

This factoid is known as an "elephant in the room." This means that it is something everyone can see, but no one wants to acknowledge for fear that it means they are not as smart as they thought they were. To avoid mentioning this point, however, is somewhere between irresponsible and plain dishonest. The reality is that without vigorous care to keep each system healthy as it gets out of balance, even the most healthy person in general terms, will be sick and struggling and may even get sicker than their un-conscientious counterparts. While this is good news…sort of…to naturopaths, chiropractors and other hands-on clinical natural healing practitioners who get paid by the visit, it is a sobering picture when viewed objectively. It means that we may not know nearly as much as we pompously propose to.

There are no standards quite clean enough to really make disease disappear and never return. This is not to say that standards are not effective, for example, the person on a basically healthy program will respond far better and faster to natural therapies. Still, many people are finding that they do not respond quite like they once did, which highlights the subject of this article.

Something is desperately wrong! It is creeping in rather subtly as we fight against it. We generally think that it is caused by this or that outrage from the corrupt drug company world or from governmental conspiracies, but if we look at the actual incline of strange diseases and the population which they are really affecting, we find a picture that looks far scarier than one where we know all the causes of everything and are happily pointing fingers and gossiping about the sins of the government and medical doctors! Indeed, the fearfulness of reality today is that we really have no clue where it is coming from and the explanations we have are grossly inadequate.

Most practitioners are forced to admit that it takes a good deal more effort and vigil today to keep even themselves healthy. Clients and patients who are not self-correcting are feeling it even more. Many who would once have just gone to their local naturopath, are now seeing five or more natural healing practitioners regularly and are not necessarily better than they were ten years ago. They are working harder for less.

This article offers no one solution to this problem, but does offer some possibilities that should be considered:

1.That the cumulative affect of heavy metals, processed food, toxicity, agriculture chemicals, environmental chemicals, EM radiation, etc. is far greater than 1+1
2.That the impact of increasing stress and discontent on individuals is leading to reduced digestion and therefore increased problems with food reactions, toxic residues and sensitivities to many, many foods that would otherwise be perfectly healthy. Even raw foodists might have to be vigilant, rotate foods and take enzyme supplements.
3.That unknown factors exist which impact the elements of the body in ways that disrupt health. This might be coming from a wide variety of intentional or unintentional sources. For a culture that understands how to use EM radiation vibrations that destroy pathogens, create homeopathic healing, do chiropractic adjustments and heal disease, we seem startlingly unconcerned about the vibration of negative thought and criticism and focus on the negative that is broadcast via EM waves over virtually the entire populated globe today.
4.That at no time in the history of the world as it is recorded in orthodox documents has there been less spiritual discipline, including moral anchors. It is at least conceivable, if not likely or certain, that moral anchors affect our health and decide our tendency toward healthier or sicker choices in all other aspects of life. Such a point is not immune from attack, but it simply appears that it is elemental to humans to worship a Higher Power who demands that they use their abilities, superior to animals as they are, for channeling "good" and resisting deviations from that "good." The interpretation of this is certain to invite debate, but perhaps the abandonment of it is equally certain to invite disease and eventual implosion.

There are two camps in the world:

First, there are those caught wholly in the wake of the ship described above. These are frustrated, confused and suffering, but unwilling to look at their real conditions and are therefore wholly taken with the trend. They sometimes want to be healthy, but they watch the news, read trash, do wantonly immoral acts, eat at fast food restaurants or eat processed food, live in traditional houses, drive traditional cars and waste in every corner of their lives. Some in the wake do nothing, and, ironically, are healthier than those who feign healthy practices, but are uncommitted to them. This may be because at least they are grateful for what they have and are living without fighting constantly.

Second, there are those who have recognized the pattern of a downward spiral and who have made the choice to swim away. These, if they totally sever their attachment to the drowning crowd, can sometimes break free and begin to triumph by altering every facet of life to be wholly incompatible with the agents of disease prominent today. These, if they neglect nothing, enjoy the peace of one who has made his or her decision and is unwilling to reconsider. They are not fighting against the world's disease agents, but are giving themselves totally to the cause of harmonious living. A Christian promise applies here, that the "meek shall inherit the earth." Meekness is most synonymous with harmonious living. Such will not be killed by the destructive forces for they are incompatible with them. They suffer only until they are clear of the wake and in the meanwhile they enjoy the peace of knowing their personal identity.

In conclusion, this article offers only an invitation to candid, open and honest readers, whether authors, practitioners or interested consumers, to look at what is really happening and judge if the above postulation is correct. If so, a change in thinking and trend must become more imminent than the crash we are partying toward so lustily.

How to Use Herbs Safely and Effectively

Starting from some time well before man was placed on earth, or evolved to his present species, the earth was covered with all manner of plant life. These plants had to deal with microorganisms, climate variations and all manner of variety.

When man entered this phase of existence, he found himself dependent on plants for food, shelter, clothing and medicine. Plants were also a source of aesthetics for man and woman.

As problems arose, holy men, shamans, witches and anyone attuned to the patterns of nature became renowned members of society. They were medicine men and women of some sort and who could treat and cure the problems of that society.

Later, animals were consumed for food and it was discovered that they could also be used for medicine. Even though this is true, it was always considered to be more pure and more harmonious with nature's patterns to use plants. Furthermore, the power in plants went far beyond healing the mere flesh (anatomy) of man and was capable of affecting his character, his awareness, his attitude and his ability to travel freely on his spiritual journey.

To be fair, animals were also sometimes eaten, or certain parts of them, for the purpose of adopting certain characteristics of that animal on one's spiritual or other journey.

While this probably seems impossible to the trained so-called "scientific" mind of today, as usual, the over educated often miss the obvious. In this case, we know today that the neuropeptides and hormones of animals work in our bodies and that those neuropeptides and hormones are not just received by every cell of the body, every tissue and organ produces some of its own! This is in addition to the exact ratio of minerals, vitamins and all nutrients needed to make that tissue healthy for that animal in its life element.

In other words, it probably works fine, at least in most cases, to adopt some of the life energy of a certain animal by eating it, or a certain animal part by eating that.

Before you get too excited about eating animals, however, may I suggest that plants are the higher way.

We have discovered that every known vital chemical in the human body is found somewhere in the plant kingdom. Some have observed that this is a good argument for the garden of Eden concept -- the human body as it is today (mortal) was formed from the dust of this earth, via plants, which put every element in our bodies that eventually formed all body processes when, at the appropriate time, a special fruit was taken which transformed all others and put them into action.

Someone observed that there is some cryptic evidence that the "forbidden fruit" was some ancestor of the pomegranate, which contains in it, in usable form, both testosterone and estrogen.

While all of this is very interesting, the practical side of it is that there are plants in every corner of the globe that will replace and restore normal functions of every kind. There are plants that will regenerate every organ.

I had a colleague do some testing for me and my wife for what systems might need help. When he discovered her adrenal glands were low, he was quite insistent that to heal them we would absolutely have to use glandulars (desiccated, or otherwise modified bovine adrenal glands) and that there was no chance that herbs alone would heal them. After a few uncomfortable moments, we managed to thank him and extricate ourselves.

We went home and put her on my adrenal herbal formula which had her adrenal glands stable and rebuilt within two and a half weeks. Generally, I keep people on my adrenal formula for at least three months, however, to keep that system rebuilding the healthiest of cells for a while so that it will continue to be strong for life. In addition to my formula, we also used Genesis brand Goji berry juice (which is a brand that's pure and I find it at least good to very good in potency and quality).

My colleague apparently did not know that herbs could regenerate at least as good as glandular medicines. Perhaps, however, in the reality he was aware of, his point of view was just as valid. Sometimes, the overall "vibration" or awareness of an individual will dictate what sort of medicine works best for him or her. If a person is in a lower state, s/he will need medicines of a secondary sort, unless that person is willing to raise his or her state while healing.

In this case of being in a lower state, glandulars, refined minerals, vitamins or chemicals, or even drugs might be the most appropriate choices.

By lower, I do not mean to condemn anyone, this life is a journey, not a destination, and it is for individuals, not for their neighbors. It does no one any sort of good to compare ground with their neighbor and to find him or herself worse off or better off than the neighbor.

Likewise, if drugs work best for you, or if glandulars do, this is not my business. I am only here to explore the realities of what I know, which are herbal -- meaning whole plant—medicines.

So with that introduction, let's talk about herbs for a few minutes.

Using herbs safely is a worry that many people have, which I often scoff at. This is because any truly dangerous herbs were abandoned many years ago by all responsible herbalists. The "dangerous" herbs in use today are many times safer than the safest of OTC (over the counter) drugs. They are safer, statistically speaking, than strawberries, which kill many people each year due to allergic reactions.

Still, anyone can be allergic to anything. This includes herbs and an allergic reaction should be noticed and appropriate action taken in that event when taking herbs.

People are far less likely to be allergic to herbs, though, because of the scarceness of those substances in the normal diet and because of the other actions of herbs that tend to either inhibit allergies or reduce the cause of allergic responses.

The real questions about herbs in use today are not about overall safety -- anyone who drinks alcohol or uses aspirin has little business worrying about the safety of the herbs in use today. The real questions, instead, revolve around drug interactions with herbs.

This is particularly difficult to answer because little research is done on the subject. Having said that, far more research has been done on it than most people think. One of the resources that I use is Dr. Duke's database of herbs. There you can find nearly all known herb-drug interactions.

Empirically, however, I have had probably two people report actual drug interference in the last eight years. In both cases the drug got stronger and less was needed while taking the herb.

Still, if you are taking a drug that might kill you or if you are taking a drug that your life depends on, you should seek the guidance of someone who has had plenty of experience and training about herb and drug interactions to guide you before you start taking this or that.

For those who are on medications for pain or discomfort, which are not likely to kill you the first time you miss the recommended dose, there are probably few to no real concerns over herb use. Of course, if you notice something, you should talk to someone who can help you.

Generally, herbs (unlike drugs) do not sit around in your body for weeks or longer after you stop taking them. If you have an interaction, stop for a few days and see if it goes away. If it does, you can suspect the herb. If it does not, something else is going on.

Sometimes, there is an overlap that can be confusing. For example, an herb might clean out the lymphatic system and toxic debris can travel to the heart and a heart arrhythmia can develop. At home, I would simply start using a heart herbal formula or maybe just motherwort tincture, but for some this can be quite upsetting. The herb might get the blame, though it was really trying to do you a favor.

After all, the herb did not put the toxic debris in your lymphatic system -- you did that!

This gets us ready for using herbs effectively.

There are three categories of using herbs that we shall discuss here:

1. Allopathy replacement: This means you use an herb to replace a drug, like using St. John's wort instead of an antidepressant or using fava beans to prevent breast cancer instead of Tamoxifen.

2. Modulation: This means you are trying to change a pattern or level of activity in the body. This would be like using burdock root for skin eruptions or ginkgo to increase circulation to the brain or Echinacea to activate or normalize the immune system.

3. Regeneration: This is where you actually attempt to rebuild the tissue in an area or organ or gland that is damaged, malformed or depleted.

Allopathy mixed with modulation is a very common way to use herbs. This is what most herbalists do. Using herbs this way requires some method of establishing a dosage. For this reason, many herbalists use muscle testing. While hugely subjective, muscle testing, when done prudently, allows the bodies of the practitioner and the client to communicate some preferences about how the herbs are used.

Another option is to research, as Dr. Duke does (mentioned before) what percentages usually exist of chemicals in plants and what the effective dose of that chemical probably is. In his books, Dr. Duke does a marvelous job of making recommendations based on this kind of research.

This concern might be easily overstated, however, since when the body is given larger doses of herbs (which have much food value) the excess is either easily excreted or the use of it is modified. Indeed, some herbs become less effective in larger doses because the body will tend to use the herb differently.

This might not produce the desired result, but it probably will not hurt you.

Some of my favorite allopathic and modulating herbs are:

* Rosemary for elevating mood and for brain electricity -- I usually recommend three capsules twice-thrice daily.

* Ginger for nausea or digestive aid -- I usually recommend doses of 5 capsules all the way up to two tablespoons or an ounce of the fresh juice.

* Ginger for chronic pain -- I usually recommend at least a table spoon of ginger twice daily, or at least 16 capsules daily. Often this is an effective cure, as well as a palliative treatment.

* St. John's wort for low serotonin -- low serotonin leaves the person feeling unable to deal with the basic difficulties of life without feeling overloaded. I usually recommend a high quality St. John's wort tincture (I like Herb Pharm and Herbs Etc.) taken by the ½ dropper full three to five times daily.

* Motherwort for heart arrhythmia -- this is usually a tincture (as above) and is taken in ¼ dropper full doses as often as needed, sometimes in excess of 8 times daily.

* I-Charge (my recipe, found on www.kalsschool.com downloads page; consists of equal parts habanero, garlic and Echinacea tincture) for any respiratory congestion or any acute infection -- this formula is very powerful and it is not uncommon to only need a half-dropper full to completely manage symptoms of congestion. For stubborn cases, I recommend 3 droppers full, five times daily.

* Celery seed for gout prevention -- while celery seed might help allay gout, especially mild cases, it really shines for prevention. We are indebted to Dr. Duke for this very effective remedy. I recommend 2-3 capsules daily.

* Yucca stalk for joint inflammation -- this takes about 10 capsules to work as well for me as one Aleve, but then again, yucca is not going to harm me in any way and will actually help improve most conditions of acute inflammation or even chronic inflammation.

* Milk thistle for liver diseases of all kinds and as an antidote to liver poisoning (such as from mushrooms) -- this is one place where you might want to use standardized extracts. Usually, I get a high quality milk thistle seed (the darker the color of the seed, the better it is supposed to be) and give it out by the tablespoon one time daily. Milk thistle also protects the liver.

* Ginkgo biloba for increased circulation to the brain -- this herb helps keep neural synapses synapsing as they should. In spite of the amazingly promising research on ginkgo for Alzheimer's and senility, it still gets overlooked most of the time by practitioners and physicians. Two capsules per day will probably work for most people as a prevention or treatment. I like this coupled with two or three ounces of apple cider vinegar in a gallon of distilled water per day for Alzheimer's disease.

Regeneration of organs and tissues is another matter. This requires an understanding of how to combine herbs. For regeneration, the herb that regenerates the tissue/organ has to be combined with an herb that will go to that specific area and another herb or multiple herbs that nourish the tissue specifically as well as support the processes that tissue is supposed to be doing while the organ heals.

This last part is important in order to give the organ or tissue a break without causing great distress to the person who is healing. The body will tend to give the break, whether there is support to replace the action of that organ or not, whenever the nutrition and medicine is present to heal a particular organ.

This is traditionally known as a healing crisis. It feels like a crisis because the body goes on hiatus -- or at least the targeted part of it does -- while the opportunity to heal a weak/damaged tissue is seized by the very wise body.

The combining of herbs is both an art and a science that is too lengthy to deal with here in any detail, but suffice it to say that if an organ needs anything more than a kick-start, wise formulation is indicated.

Often I consult with people using cascara sagrada all by itself for bowel problems, for example. If the bowel just needs a quick awakening, that is fine, but otherwise, if the bowel has a long term problem, a good healing and regenerating herbal formula is needed for the bowel.
